The Christmas Ghost Writers - 2nd - 5th December
A four-day writing course with Welsh BAFTA-winner Owen Thomas - designed for aspiring writers at any level.
‘Scrooge feared the silent shape so much that his legs trembled beneath him.’
Christmas is a time for ghosts. From Charles Dickens to Susan Hill to M.R. James, many writers have tried to capture the darker side of this, ‘the most wonderful time of year…’ Tales of phantoms and lost souls have chilled the festive fireside for many generations.
My name is Owen Thomas. I have been obsessed with ghost stories from the first time I picked up Usborne’s ‘The World of the Unknown: Ghosts’ at Primary School. Now, as a Professional writer, they continue haunting my reading, my writing, and my imagination.
I have held many workshops on the construction and creation of ghost stories. ‘The Ghost Writers’ a recent six-week course at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, saw 17 writers create a range of unique, chilling ghost stories professionally read on Halloween.
In these four days we will explore the Christmas Ghost Story, identifying themes and styles that make the genre unique. We will explore various classic examples and identify common elements within to help us in the creation of our own festive ghost story.
At the end of the week each writer will have crafted their own perfect Christmas Ghost Story. These can be shared in the beautiful surrounds of Makers House, Hastings, before being ready to be shared around your own individual firesides on Christmas Eve night...
The aim of these four days is best left in the words of the ghost story master, M. R. James…
“If any of my stories succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at nightfall or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained.”
