Artist Residencies

A Home for Time, Space and Creation

Makers’ House is now offering bespoke, subsidised artist residencies. Designed for artists, creatives and companies who need time and space to develop, experiment or simply get away from the day-to-day.

You might be a writer looking for uninterrupted time to work, a theatre company developing a new piece, a creative team R&Ding an idea, or a group looking for somewhere to work together away from the big city.

We offer a flexible combination of spaces to suit different kinds of creative work, including private bedrooms, a main rehearsal room and two breakout spaces. In the evenings, there’s ample space for your group to come together, cook and dine.

We offer a range of subsidy models, from tiered pricing to space-in-kind. Every residency is tailored around your needs, with packages starting from just £45 per night.

Tell us what you’re working on, what you need from the space and what you can afford, and we’ll explore what might be possible.

About the House

Makers’ House has become a welcoming home for artists working across the creative arts. With the warmth and hospitality of Liz and Chris, it’s more than just a rehearsal space — it’s a comfortable place to work, think and spend time together.

The main space can accommodate up to 14 people, for table work or rehearsals on their feet. There’s a large lounge with a log fire for scriptwriting and discussion, and a bright sunroom overlooking the garden — a good spot to take a break, get some air or simply switch off for a while.

Accommodation

The house is a place to rest as well as focus. Individuals can stay at Makers’ House in our large, quiet and comfortable guest rooms. For larger groups, we have a network of local friends who are happy to offer comfortable, affordable accommodation nearby.

Food

We know that good food and shared meals are part of a good working day. Rather than rushing out for a quick sandwich, we encourage guests to take their time, relax and enjoy the house and each other’s company.

Whether you choose to self-cater, cook together or have us cook for you, the house has a fully equipped kitchen to help make your stay easy and enjoyable.

Why here?

Hastings and St Leonards are among the sunniest places in the UK, but even in winter the towns buzz with life and culture.

They’ve attracted a large and celebrated creative community, while retaining a strong sense of their own identity. That’s perhaps because these towns have long been cultural hotspots in their own right.

The folk traditions of Jack in the Green and the Sussex Bonfire Societies have rubbed shoulders for years with sea shanties at the Jenny Lind, the live music extravaganza of Fat Tuesday, the eccentric tradition of racing a butcher’s bike up one of the steepest streets in town in memory of a local fisherman, and the Old Town Pram Race, which raises thousands for charity each year.

It’s a culture that has always been active and that continues to evolve and inspire.

And, if that wasn’t enough - if you like dogs, we have three.
