Modern clowning is having its moment.
Join LUKA WELLMAN — a member of the last cohort personally taught by the late, great Philippe Gaulier — for a taste of modern clowning.
This two-hour workshop invites you to dip a toe into the playful, surprising world of contemporary clown: to embrace the ridiculous, explore presence, and find humour in the everyday.
Ideal for curious beginners and anyone who wants to loosen up and play.
The taster class will take place at Makers’ House Hastings on Sunday 1st November, 7pm-9pm.

Whether you have musical experience or none at all, join internationally renowned Cabaret sensation JOE BLACK as he guides you in fusing story and song into the sharp, satirical interplay that is the essence of Cabaret.
For over 100 years, Cabaret has remained the rebellious, beating heart of live entertainment, its biting blend of Weimar Berlin cabaret and British seaside Music Hall embraced anew by each generation.

The workshop will conclude with an invitation to present your work at a salon-style performance at Makers’ House that evening.
The workshop takes place at Makers’ House Hastings on Sunday 29th November, 10am to 5pm. The performance will occur on the Sunday evening.

Your subconscious mind is a source of great wisdom. Connecting with it can reveal powerful insights and hidden strengths.
This three-day course will use a mixture of hypnotherapeutic and theatrical techniques to illustrate how the unconscious mind makes itself present in our everyday lives, and to teach how we might calm the mind in order to make the unconscious a more active participant in our choices.

The workshop is led by Co-director of the house, Chris New, and therapeutic coach and hypnotherapist Charley Surridge, and will combine a carefully balanced mixture of group work and one-to-one time for reflection and integration. You’ll engage in hypnotic guided meditations and theatrical games, including work with masks, as you explore the character of your own Subconscious and begin to develop your connection with your true self.

Screens — whether big or small — have increasingly become the dominant medium for actors.This two-day workshop will introduce you to exactly what’s required to craft a performance for the screen, and it’s led by Makers’ House co-director — and star of the film Weekend — Chris New.
Whether it’s hitting your marks, getting the right eye-line, or negotiating continuity across shots, this course will introduce you to all the tools you’ll need on any film set, big or small.
All participants will be asked to prepare a scene in advance, guided by Chris, so you can get the most out of your two days before the camera, and you’ll receive a digital downloaded of your developed scene for you to take away with you.
The workshop will take place at Makers’ House Hastings on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October, 10am - 5pm.
